Reiser Relief Inc. donation to provide 104,167 nutritious meals to families in Haiti

Reiser Relief Inc. had plans to donate $20,000, but more gifts came in and enable us to donate $25,000 which will provide the raw ingredients to produce 104,167 nutritious meals to families in Haiti. These MannaPak meal packets are made by Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), and the food is packaged in small pouches which have won rave reviews all over the world. While the formula was designed to save the lives of severely malnourished and starving children, the ingredients also improve the health, growth and physical well-being of children who are no longer in immediate danger of starvation. A team of food scientists continues to monitor the FMSC formula to ensure that it meets nutritional needs of the world’s hungry children.

A single bag of food—which provides highly nutritious meals for six children—costs around $1.44 to produce, and 93 percent of all donations to FMSC goes directly toward the food program.

Reiser Relief donated $10,000 to FMSC earlier this year and also in February 2010. President of Reiser Relief, Father Bernard Reiser has been working to support the poor in Haiti for more than 16 years. He incorporated Reiser Relief in 2007 to provide fresh water and food to Haitian families and support two schools, located in Cite Soleil and Lespinasse/Donte.

got milk? - and some Haitian cookies?

Got Milk? It's a well known phrase and commercial and we all know what a great combination Milk and Cookies are.

Below is a common Haitian family cookie recipe.

Haitian Dirt Cookie Recipe

In a large bucket or bowel, sift in the dirt, shortening or oil and maybe some salt.

Gradually whisk in the water stirring continuously to produce a heavy liquid batter until it becomes smooth and creamy – a little kneading maybe necessary to help water penetrate all the grains of dirt evenly. Other ingredients maybe added deepening on personal preference. It should be noted, many recipes are handed down from generation to generation.

For better results - use pure clean fresh drinkable water.

Batter consistency - It can be more in a paste form or more liquidity - the "baking" time will differ. For better results it’s preferable to make the cookies on a nice clear sunny day so to allow the heat of the sun to fully bake the cookies dry in the open air. Depending the month of the year, the summer months with a hot scorching sun will produce a finished product faster and can be brought to markets sooner and be sold on the streets.

If the batter is in more in a paste form, the batter can spooned out into a 3 inch dollops or dough ball and then take the spoon to flatten out to about 4 inches to 6 inches round. With a liquidity batter mixture, pour the creamy rich batter out onto a level tarp, here again take the spoon to flatten out to about 4 inches to 6 inches.

Tis the season to bake cookies - but a new recipe is needed for these the dirt cookies are not nutritious, but they do fill your stomach, so the locals report.

Let's get the dirt out --

Depending on your palate, it’s been reported that the dirt cookies have an unpleasant taste. A reporter sampling a cookie found that it had a smooth consistency and sucked all the moisture out of the mouth as soon as it touched the tongue. For hours, an unpleasant taste of dirt lingered.

Your financial support makes it possible for us to feed children and families in Haiti. Nutritious meal packets cost less than $1.50 to produce and 94 percent of all gifts going to the feeding program, your gift will go a long way in the fight against hunger.

A single packet of food provides highly nutritious meals for six children and our produce by Feed My Starving Children.

$52 provides 216 MannaPack meals - $208 provides 864 meals for patients in a malnourishment clinic - $855 will fill ½ pallet with MannaPack meals to support a mountain village - $1710 provides an entire pallet of meals.

Let’s clean the tummies and get the dirt out - Help fill a stomach with real food.

Last year, more than 42,000 donors logged on to GiveMN and gave more than $10 million to Minnesota charities during the 24-hour-long event. Again this year, we are given the power and opportunity to raise millions of dollars for Reiser Relief along with others.

Golden Ticket Bonus Grants
What if you could help Reiser Relief win $1,000 or $10,000 just by giving only $10? On Give to the Max Day, you can help us gain multiple chances at increasing our donations by participating in this online giving event. (Details)

On behalf of Reiser Relief Inc., I extend our warmest greetings to you and your families this autumn season. We are so grateful for the support that we have received from our donors. Thank You!

I remember the days when there were not freezers in the home and preserving the harvest for the winter months by canning was quite a challenge. Canning was always a great undertaking in late summer and fall, when hundreds and hundreds of jars were filled with the wonderful produce of the summer. It was a tedious and long job, but putting the harvest in Mason jars always left us feeling satisfied with our labors as we had the assurance that when the wind blew cold and the snow piled high outside, the kitchen table would be laden with nourishing and tasty foods.

Reiser Relief needs to plan for its upcoming winter season as well by filling its stores, and you have the opportunity to make a huge difference for the poor in Haiti. With your help we can continue to provide essential services to many Haitian families in their day-to-day efforts for survival. These services include providing fresh water, stocking food centers, and funding education and eldercare facilities.

We hope you will help support Reiser Relief by logging on to http://reiserrelief.org/ on November 16 and "Bring Hope to Haiti." Be part of this historic event and join the Great Minnesota Give Together! Give to the Max!!!

We thank you for your interest and support in helping us spread HOPE to the men, women, and children of Haiti. May God bless each of you most abundantly and know you are in my daily Mass and prayers.

Catholic Writers Guild awards the Seal of Approval to “Reiser’s Ramblings" Book

On July 27, 2011 “Reiser’s Ramblings,” a Catholic Christian spiritual life book by Father Bernard Reiser and illustrated by Mark Sanislo has been awarded the Catholic Writers Guild the Seal of Approval.

About the Seal of Approval

The Catholic Writers Guild (CWG )Seal of Approval (SoA) assures Catholic bookstore owners and readers with an endorsement that the book supports Catholic beliefs and values.

The CWG began the SoA after discussions with Catholic bookstore owners who indicated they often did not have time to fully evaluate books and thus often did not stock books that came from unknown writers or smaller presses.

The SoA is not a critique of a work, but rather an assurance of its "Catholicity" and that neither the work nor its author go against the Mageristerium authority of the Catholic Church. They evaluate for Catholicity, not for writing style or quality. The book is evaluated by three to five members of the SoA Committee, who are members in good standing in the CWG.

Just what are some people saying about Reiser’s Ramblings?

Midwest Book Review July 12, 2011 - A story of a good man with the drive to bring more good through the world, highly recommended!

Janette Fuller July 26, 2011 - Father Reiser Writes With Passion, Conviction and Confidence. Join me on a spiritual journey that is inspiring, illuminating and heartening....I want to emphasize that this is not a book exclusively for those of the Roman Catholic faith. This book is for me and it is for anyone who is seeking a closer personal relationship with Jesus Christ. "Reiser's Ramblings" will make a wonderful addition to your Christian library.

Spiritual Memoirs of a Catholic Priest - These ramblings memoirs are composed of moving, funny, and profound vignettes that blur the line between sermon and a story. Like a homily, father will share a little scripture with a story that helps readers understand that verse and, even more, learn to live it.

Over 2600 books have been sold since its release in June 2010 and all profits from the sale are being used for Haitian relief efforts sponsored by Reiser Relief, Inc. These “Ramblings” are a collection of the best columns written over the past three decades by Fr. Bernard Reiser who takes on everyday topics such as family, kindness, gratitude, prayer, helping others, and staying focused on what’s important in life. Fr. Reiser’s essays are rich in symbolism, wise in understanding of human nature and take your heart on a spiritual journey.

Janette Fuller Book Review Reiser's Ramblings

Reiser's Ramblings Book Review - Join me on a spiritual journey that is inspiring, illuminating.

Please check out a very nice book review on Reiser's Ramblings by blogger Janette Fuller: I like how she has captured the some of the spiritual themes and how she was able to put it into words the way Father writes and speaks: “The prose is written in an expressive, emotional and melodious style that is music to the reader’s heart. Father Reiser writes with passion, conviction and confidence.” See the book review at her blog.

Reiser Relief keeps wheels turning in Haiti

by Sue Austreng Staff Writer - ABCNEWSPapers.com
Saturday, May 7, 2011

Their hearts beating with boundless compassion and their wallets eager for bountiful harvest, some 500 guests attended the April 26 Bringing Hope to Haiti fund-raising event at the Courtyards of Andover.

The fifth annual Reiser Relief fund-raiser was staged at the Courtyards of Andover and guests did, indeed, to their best to “keep the wheel turning.”

That wheel – the wheel of life fueled by Reiser Relief projects providing fresh water, stocking food centers and funding education and eldercare facilities – is turning in the impoverished country of Haiti.

According to Doris Schulte, vice president of the Reiser Relief board, $55,000 in donations have been collected as a result of the event – and checks are still coming in.

editorial note from Reiser Relief May 14th "Thank you for generously supporting our Keep The Wheel Turning - Haiti Fundraising Event, held April 24. We are pleased to share that we raised $82,000 for Reiser Relief projects that evening. Praise God! We are so grateful for your participation!"

Money was raised at the April 26 event when guests purchased $5 general admission tickets, participated in live and silent auctions, purchased raffle tickets, paid entry fees to play a couple of games and bought copies of Rev. Bernard Reiser’s devotional book, “Reiser’s Ramblings.”
“We are so grateful for the generosity of so many people,” said Schulte.

Reiser, the founder of Reiser Relief and longtime priest at Epiphany Catholic Church, Coon Rapids, echoed Schulte’s sentiment.

“We are so grateful for the support from all of you,” Reiser said. “May God bless each of you most abundantly and know you are in my daily Mass and prayers.”

Fresh water project

In addition to Bringing Hope to Haiti fund-raiser money going to Reiser Relief’s Haitian service projects, a refurbished water truck will be sent to the Caribbean country, as well.

The truck, acquired and refurbished by Harri Rinta, will be used along with a second Reiser Relief water truck to deliver fresh, free water to 24 neighborhoods in one of the poorest slums in the western hemisphere.

Kevin McClellan, coordinator of the Reiser Relief fresh water project, said that the project provides yearly delivery of more than four million gallons of clean water to the poor in the Haitian slum of Cité Soleil.

According to www.ReiserRelief.org, the Reiser Relief water trucks deliver four 3,500-gallon loads of water, six days a week, 52 weeks per year to thousands of people.

That is the equivalent of 800,000 five gallon buckets of water each year.

Birth of Reiser Relief

Reiser Relief was formed by Reiser shortly after he returned from his first trip to Haiti more than a dozen years ago.

Since its beginning, as stated on its website, Reiser Relief has “helped to bestow new hope for many hundreds of God’s needy people through the generosity of a great number of people.”

Reiser Relief monthly expenses include:
• $2,000 to pay salaries for Haitian water truck drivers, maintain the trucks and buy fuel

• $2,500 for teachers’ salaries

• $1,250 to cover the costs of running two schools

Those interested in learning more about Reiser Relief – and those who would like to make a donation – should visit http://www.ReiserRelief.org.

Donations can also be sent to Reiser Relief, Inc., 1800 111th Ave. N.W., #320, Coon Rapids, MN 55433.

Those interested in learning more about Reiser Relief – and those who would like to make a donation – should visit www.ReiserRelief.org

My heartfelt thank you for your generous gifts at our annual Haiti fundraiser

My heartfelt thank you for your generous gifts at our annual Haiti fundraiser. You certainly are serving Christ in a most magnificent and glorious way with your gift and we are most grateful and blessed for having your support. You have, in a very personal way, shown love and caring for God’s neglected children and adults.

Thank you for your dedication to serve these very, very needy people of Haiti.

As you know, we live in a world facing extreme challenges. It is truly heartwarming, therefore, when someone goes to great lengths to help those in need. There is so much need among the families and communities where we are working. I can assure you we will find important use for your kind donation.

Reiser Relief provides essential services to aid Haitians in their day-today efforts for survival. These services include providing fresh water, stocking food centers, and funding education and eldercare facilities.

Many of our outreach projects are in or near Cité Soleil, a slum near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Reiser Relief funds a water truck that operates six days a week, delivering fresh water free of charge — a lifesaving resource to numerous impoverished Haitians who use five-gallon buckets to haul this water back to cardboard shanties or tin shacks that serve as family homes.

My trips to Haiti have been an experience of a lifetime, never to be forgotten. The scenes of Haiti will always remain fresh within my mind and heart. I will always maintain a determination to alleviate a little bit of suffering as best I can. All humans are made in God’s image and likeness, and they deserve to be treated with dignity, honor, and to have at least the bare essentials of life. The reward for those who help the poor will certainly be most bountiful on the last day, as our Lord said: I assure you, as often as you did it for one of my least brothers and sisters, you
did it for me. (Matthew 25:40)

God’s love and generosity toward us is often taken for granted. Considering the many gifts we all enjoy, it is worth our time to pause and say, “Thank you, God!” Through helping others, we do express our gratitude for all the gifts we enjoy. Likewise, your gift is an expression of gratitude — a thank you sent to God.

Our work is inspired by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. With the help of supporters like you, Reiser Relief can continue to save the lives of the extremely impoverished people of Haiti. May God bless you most abundantly for your support! I thank you and assure you that you shall
be included in my daily Mass and prayers.

Sincerely in Christ,

Father Bernard Reiser

Haiti Relief Event April 26 2011 - Andover, MN by Reiser Relief

March 11,2011

Dear Friends,

This letter is my personal invitation to join me in our efforts to help the neediest people in the western hemisphere.

On April 26,2011, Reiser Relief is hosting its annual Haiti fundraising event. The event will once again be held at the Courtyards of Andover and will be an evening filled with fun, opportunities to renew relationships, along with information on how you can help support our project work in one of the world's poorest nations. Reiser Relief provides food, water, education and housing to the citizens of earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

We are reminded that during our Lord's life, He continually encouraged His followers to reach out to those in need. This event offers you the perfect opportunity to follow His call to serve. Your continued financial participation means thousands who are hungry will receive food, education, and fresh drinking water.

At the April 26 event, you will learn how Reiser Reliefs 2010 efforts are bearing fruit and you'll have an opportunity to help us fund the current year's initiatives. We accomplished some beautiful work for God in 2010 and I am hopeful you can join us for this special evening as we look back and move forward.

"Save the Date" to reserve space on your calendar for this important event. Feel free to invite a friend or neighbor to share this evening with you. If you are unable to attend, please consider sending a financial contribution to help us in this important and great endeavor.

I will be sure to keep you up-to-date on how our work progresses as together - we keep the wheel turning! God Bless each of you most abundantly. You are in my daily Mass and prayers.

Haiti Mission Trip Update

1/29/2011 Haiti Mission Trip Update From Shelly Mannella

We need more time. There is so much to accomplish here and each time we think it will be easy it becomes more complicated. We visited Mother Teresa's orphanage yesterday. The sister's are incredible. It's hard to explain all they do and they never complain or get angry. They hear sick babies crying all day and still smile. When it was time for us to leave the babies started crying and one of the sisters took out crackers. She offered them to the kids but they shook their heads no. She said " Crackers can't replace the human touch".

Today we spent the day at an orphanage. Dr. Sem came to examine the kids. 85% of them need some kind of antibiotic. He saw 38 kids. The rest of us played with the kids while the others were being examined. These kids are so spiritual, they sing like angels and to listen to their prayers, it's unbelievable.

We stopped by an area where the bodies were dumped after the earthquake. It is full of black crosses and it's a very moving spot. We placed some rosaries on some of the crosses and prayed for their souls.

Thank you to everyone for your continous prayer, we have been blessed.

Please continue to pray, on Monday we will go to Mother Teresa's house for the dying. We have never been there and hope our prayers for the people will comfort them.

God Bless
Shelley, Missy, Marie

Haiti Mission Trip Update

1/27/2011 Haiti Mission Trip Update From Shelly Mannella

We went to Reiser Heights today. It is a breathtaking drive up the mountain. The contrast is incredible. We came from cement and dust, up the mountain to fresh air and green land. It's still poverty but I say in the city it's chaotic poverty, in the mountain, it's quite poverty. It was good to visit Mialta, principle at Reiser Heights while school was in session.

The children are beautiful. We had them make bracelets with pipe cleaners and beads. Can you imagine going into our public schools and doing this and having the kids like it? We also had tooth paste and tooth brushes to give them along with school supplies and balls to play with. Two members of our team bought goats for some people in the community around Reiser Heights and we delivered them to the new owners.

There is a lot of need up there for the up keep of the building, adding new class rooms, stocking the shelves at the medical clinic, and keeping up on the salaries of the teachers. They work hard there to provide an education and also to involve the community in the school. The teachers were patient and kind, but the school books are worn.

They will continue on in their silent poverty trying to make a life for the children by providing them with an education.

Reiser Heights by Marie Schrank Hi, it's Marie. We had such a great day today; taking in all the beauty that Haiti truly has to offer. We took a two hour drive up the Mts. of Fort-Jacques /Donte/Lespinasse, which was absolutely breath taking and gave me a whole new perspective of Haiti. The drive took us up to Reiser Heights which is a school for all age children of which over 400 attend. What a wonderful time we had sharing a craft and treats with the kids. The Haitiian children are so kind and grateful. You can see the innocence and love in their eyes. They loved our presence and we loved being with them. It was hard to leave them. We took many wonderful pictures and hope to share them with you all. Many blessings to you all until tomorrow.

Haiti Mission Trip Update

1/26/2011 Haiti Mission Trip Update From Shelly Mannella

We finally arrived and we are safe. We had to spend the night in Miami last night due to a broken airplane. We arrived at 10:00am today It is so nice to be back. The smells, the sounds, and the people, are what make me always want to come back.

We were able to do runs on the water truck today. The people still need the water desperatly. We were able to treat a few people who had wounds and we made some oral rehydration salts to send back to a very sick baby along with some infant tylenol. There are a few new additions to City Soleil this trip. Cholera clinics. They've set up two large areas with tents for cholera treatment and prevention. We also finally noticed there is some reconstruction going on.

We are going to Reiser Heights tomorrow and really looking forward to it. We plan on buying goats for a few families up there and have a lot of supplies to leave with them.

God Bless
Shelley

Local Groups Still Reaching Out to Haiti Quake Victims

City of Coon Rapids Minnesota, Cable News Network

COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- This week marks the one year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti. The natural disaster killed more than 300,000 people and left much of the country in ruins.

Several local organizations have helped in Haiti over the past year but volunteers say progress is slow. Still, that hasn't dampened their spirits to keep helping.

"I didn't see a whole lot of clean up going on."

Shelley Mannella has travelled to Haiti two times since the earthquake as a volunteer for Reiser Relief, a non-profit organization that helps the country's poor.

"It was bad before but now it's bad on top of bad."

Mannella says much of the rubble remains in the country. She's headed to Haiti again in just over a week again.

"I don't expect to see anything different."

Estimates are at least one million people have been displaced from their homes because of the quake.

Mannella says, "I know people are afraid to go back inside, even if they have a house, they're afraid to sleep inside."

Thousands of people are living in tents and organizations like Reiser Relief and others are bringing in fresh water for people to drink. And Coon Rapids based Feed My Starving Children provided 58 million pre-packaged meals to Haiti last year. That's double what it normally sends.

FMSC Executive Director Mark Crea says, "The need is still great. We can't this coming year send less food to Haiti than we did last year. We need to send as much or more actually so we need your help again."

The non-profit hopes that Americans will keep their hearts and their wallets open as they continue to send food to the country. And for Carole Stufflebeam, a nurse from Prior Lake who is working in an orphanage and clinic in Haiti, she says food shipped from the U.S. is helping to fill a void for people who simply can't provide for themselves.

Stufflebeam says, "The amount of people that are still left in camps, there is no way these people can make money and there's no way they can do a garden and so what direction do they go? And that is for a long period of time, we're going to have to see what we can do to meet those needs until we can get these people independent."

Along with a government in transition, removing the rubble is the other largest barrier right now. There's not enough heavy equipment in Haiti and the cost is staggering.

Kevin McClellan's Haiti Water Delivery Story

Remebering Back Feb 2010

Kevin McClellan's Haiti Story -
Called to quench a slum's thirst
JIM SPENCER, Star Tribune.

They ran for blocks when they saw the big truck with the Minnesota license plate roll by. Little girls and old women, little boys and young men, all chasing the shiny silver tanker down streets of Cite Soleil, one of the world’s worst slums. Past fly-infested garbage piles, by canals reeking of raw sewage, they carried buckets, pans, pots, tubs — anything that could hold what has become gold in the ruins of Haiti’s catastrophic earthquake: clean water.

Behind the wheel of the semi-cab pulling the tanker, a short, wiry Minneapolis man with a badly sunburned face grinned. The dirty wool Greek seaman's cap perched on his head didn't really fit the tropical surroundings. But then, many things about Kevin McClellan don't fit.

Haiti One Year Later

Reiser Relief Inc. is one of the Haiti non-profits selected by Razoo, a leader in organizing online giving, in remembering Haiti one year after the Jan 12, 2010 earthquake that devastated this little Caribbean island.

Donate to Reiser Relief to Help Haiti

This anniversary of the disaster is a reminder to the world community that Haiti must not be forgotten and is a call to redouble efforts to support the Haitian people.

Reiser Relief is compelled to provide the essential services to aid in day-to-day survival. The services Reiser Relief provides include: fresh water, food centers, education, and eldercare facilities. Many outreach projects are in or near Cité Soleil; the suburb of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Reiser Relief provides assistance to Haiti focused on the basic necessities of life: Food, Water, Education, and Building Facilities.

Reiser Relief funds a water truck that operates six days a week making four deliveries too many poor neighborhoods/tent cities/clinics in Cite Soleil and provides water free of charge, reaching numerous impoverished families where the local people carry the water home in 5 gallon buckets. The little red truck got a lot more use in 2010, for having water is critical for life, it was a life line for the many in need. Your help is needed to keep this truck on the road.

We support the transportation of the food we ship which is provided through Feed My Starving Children. Each the three shipping contains 500,000 highly nutritious packets of food, with each packet keeping one person alive for one day.

With the help of our donors, Reiser Relief can continue to save the lives of these extremely impoverished people! We live among abundance; the Haitians live in extreme poverty. They await your generous response and we pray for God’s abundant blessings upon you. With deep gratitude, we thank you for helping us to "Keep the Wheel Turning!" Together, we make a difference in touching the lives of thousands of people!

We are reminded that giving drink to the thirsty is one of the seven corporal works of Mercy. "Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers or sisters of mine, you did for Me" (Matthew 25:40). May God bless you most abundantly!

2010 January Haiti Earthquake

My thoughts often go to Haiti and the 2010 January earthquake in which thousands died. With churches, schools and homes demolished, people have been living in camps and sleeping under makeshift tents surrounded by rubble and sewage. I think of these people often when I go to bed, which is clean and warm, because the conditions they are surviving under are truly unbelievable. And now, they face the scourge of cholera.

We are compelled to provide the essential services to aid in day-to-day survival.

In 2010, Reiser Relief provided aid to thousands of people suffering after the earthquake made possible by hundreds of generous donations. We continue to provide monthly education, food and clean water various area in Port-au-Prince. We support the transportation of the food we ship which is provided through Feed My Starving Children. Each the three shipping contains 500,000 highly nutritious packets of food, with each packet keeping one person alive for one day.

Some reconstruction was needed for Terre Promise Primary School in Cité Soleil, which was left standing and still solid, but needed various repairs to some walls and damaged plumbing and a new expansion for classrooms. Three other non-profits and Reiser Relief funded this project which is now complete.

Grace Village buildings took some damages after the earthquake but now the new concrete walls are complete and roof sheathing is installed two dormitories and a central feeding center. Plumbing including cistern and septic tanks are roughed in and capped. We are also excited for the street children and elderly and the impact that the new Feeding Center will have on their lives. Bringing food to those that often go hungry will provide us with the opportunity to share God's loving touch to those in need. As we look to building completion, we are now pressed to provide site cleanup, and a security wall around the property. The security wall must be build to protect those who come for food as well as those who live there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB3d2sQRLj8

My past visits with poor Haitians convinced me that I always need to advocate for them and remember their needs and I ask you to share with our brothers and sisters in Haiti. The Lord will bless you for your gift.

A very blessed New Year to you and your loved ones. I shall include you in my daily Mass and prayers.
